About Andy Warhol: The Defining Figure of American Pop Art
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was born in Pittsburgh to Carpatho-Rusyn immigrant parents. He arrived in New York as a commercial illustrator and became the artist who best understood what celebrity, advertising and mass production meant for the culture around him. His Marilyn, taken from a 1953 publicity still for Niagara and issued as a portfolio of ten screenprints in 1967, and his Flowers portfolio of 1970 are among the most recognisable images of the twentieth century. Prints are the most accessible way to live with them.
The Technique: Serial Imagery, Silkscreen and Commercial Ink
Warhol repeated a single image with shifts of colour and embraced silkscreen printing rather than hiding it. Flat colour blocks, deliberate misregistration and the feel of a production line are the point. The range at Creed shows how far the idea stretched. There is the glamour of Marilyn and Elizabeth Taylor, and the packaging iconography of Chanel No. 5, which Chanel commissioned him to explore in 1985. There is also Camouflage, his last print portfolio, and Happy Greta Garbo Day, an offset lithograph from around 1954 that dates from his years as a New York commercial illustrator.
Are These Real Warhols? Understanding Warhol Prints
Warhol prints fall into three broad groups, and we label every piece clearly.
Warhol-period prints were made during his career or at its close. Examples are the 1981 Castelli Graphics Marilyn, an invitation print for the New York gallery that represented him (30.5 cm square, with a Creed Gallery certificate of authenticity), and the 1987 Camouflage, an edition of 80 signed on the reverse by Frederick Hughes, executor of his estate. Happy Greta Garbo Day belongs here too, though it is not catalogued by Feldman & Schellmann and survives in only a small number of impressions.
Sunday B. Morning editions are our Marilyns in Mint, Silver and Pink, and our Flowers. Sunday B. Morning is a Belgian imprint that began printing Warhol's images in 1970 after a short-lived collaboration with him, and has published them independently since, from negatives it says came from his studio. They are open editions on museum board at 91.4 cm (36 in) square, unsigned, and stamped on the reverse "Published by Sunday B. Morning" and "fill in your own signature". Because they were published independently of Warhol's studio, they cost a fraction of Warhol-period prints. Collectors buy them for the scale, the colour and the printing.
After-Warhol editions include Stars and Legends, a 1990 portfolio of six offset lithographs published by Te Neues and licensed by the Andy Warhol Foundation, and Elizabeth Taylor, an unsigned, unnumbered and trimmed impression after his screenprint design.
