About Invader: The Masked Artist Behind the Space Invader Mosaics
Invader was born in France in 1969, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and works under a pseudonym, appearing masked in public. In 1998 he began "invading" Paris with ceramic mosaics of aliens from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders. The project has since spread to more than 80 cities in over 30 countries, with more than 4,000 mosaics installed. Paris alone has well over a thousand. Every invasion is mapped and published as a guide, and his FlashInvaders app lets anyone "flash" a mosaic to score points, turning the whole project into a real-world game. His mosaics have turned up in places the street never reaches, including the Louvre, where he placed ten in 1998 without permission, the seabed of Cancún Bay, and the International Space Station.
The Medium: From Bathroom Tiles to Rubikcubism
Ceramic tile was a conceptual choice as much as a practical one. A bathroom tile is the physical equivalent of a pixel, so the domestic and the digital end up in the same object. His Rubikcubism series applies the same logic to the Rubik's Cube, another object defined by colour arrangement and the grid. His Rubik Master Pieces reconstruct famous images from cubes, and the six-colour palette turns them into near-abstract pointillist images that resolve only from a distance. His editions carry that pixel logic into print.
Collecting Invader at Creed Gallery
Our Invader prints both come from his work with HENI. The CAMO edition is from the Camouflage series begun in 2023, where a Space Invader hides inside military camouflage patterns, a pattern designed to defeat the eye rendered in the grid language of the arcade. Ours is CAMO S-3C-M4, a signed limited-edition silkscreen. Rubik Shot Red Marilyn (2023) is a 100 × 100 cm Diasec-mounted giclée on aluminium panel in an edition of 774, hand-signed and numbered by Invader on the label on the back. It reworks Warhol's Marilyn in Rubik's Cube pixels. Prices run from £3,950 to £4,500 and reflect edition size, size and condition. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, and our team can talk you through provenance, condition and framing. If a work is sold, register your interest and we'll tell you when comparable editions arrive.
Why Collect Invader
Invader is one of very few street artists whose project reaches from a Paris wall to the International Space Station, and his large Rubikcubist works have reached six figures at auction. His print editions are the most accessible way to own that world. As with any artist, individual pieces vary in demand and value, and our team is happy to talk you through any work you're considering.
