About Jean-Michel Basquiat
Basquiat (1960–1988) was born in Brooklyn to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother. In the late 1970s he wrote aphoristic SAMO graffiti on the walls of Lower Manhattan with Al Diaz, and by the early 1980s he was showing in galleries and making paintings full of crowns, skulls, anatomical diagrams and text. He was close to Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, and he died in 1988, aged 27. His Untitled (1982) sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby's in 2017. His work was the subject of a major exhibition at the Barbican in London in 2017 and at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris in 2018.
Our Basquiat Prints
Sketch of Keith Haring reproduces a drawing Basquiat made in Milan in October 1983, showing Haring in a shirt printed with his barking-dog motif, beside a caricatured "Side View" and a speech bubble reading "Famous". It is a print reproduction, not an original work on paper: the sheet is 33 × 47 cm (50 × 65 cm framed), unsigned and unnumbered, and we hold two framed examples at £499 each. Dog Leg Study (1982–83, published 2019) was a screenprint on Somerset Satin paper, 56 × 76 cm, published posthumously.
