Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll is the most culturally loaded of all possible neon subjects — Ian Dury's 1977 song title having become, in the decades since its recording, the defining shorthand for the entire counter-cultural proposition of rock music: the rejection of bourgeois propriety, the celebration of physical pleasure, the belief that music is both the vehicle and the justification for a different way of living. In neon — the medium of the bar, the club, the late-night venue, the spaces where rock culture has always been most alive — the phrase becomes both a declaration and a description of its own context.

Mark Sloper — trained at Central Saint Martins, working from the UK, hand-crafting each piece using traditional glass neon tubing — brings to this subject the formal precision and material commitment that distinguishes his practice from more commercially produced neon sign work.
