About Ben Jeffery

Ben Jeffery was born in 1986 and grew up in Barnet, north London. His grandfather introduced him to the work of the watercolourist John Varley (1778–1842), who was related to the Jeffery family. He decided to become an artist at secondary school, when he and classmates competed to draw the best portrait, and a portrait of his father for a mock GCSE was admired by his whole class. He studied art to degree level, but says his technique is mostly self-taught, since tutors set subjects and left him to develop his own ideas. He wanted to paint in oils with bright, detailed colour, which wasn't always welcomed. After university he considered becoming a concept artist for films and video games, and tried digital painting, but he found that paint has a depth and feel he couldn't match digitally. He has said he is a lifelong fan of sci-fi films.

The Work: Cinema in Oil

His paintings take film and pop culture as their subject, and he starts with a basic composition and lets shapes, colours and details emerge as he goes. He also paints landscapes, drawing on the views around his parents' houses in Herefordshire and on the Isle of Harris.
