About Danielle O'Connor Akiyama: Western Abstraction, Japanese Brushwork
O'Connor Akiyama divides her time between Canada and the west coast of Ireland, where the hills, the Atlantic and the constantly changing light feed her work. She studied sumi-e, the Japanese art of ink brush painting, and according to her biography was awarded a Master's Seal for outstanding work. A red Japanese chop mark appears in her paintings, which her biography ties to an honorary sumi-e title, "Source of Joy". The result is painting that stays loose and colourful but is built on the economy of a brush that can't be corrected.
The Materials: Minerals, Gold and Diamond Tailings
She collects minerals, among them gold, quartz and diamond tailings, and works them into her paints. This gives the surfaces real texture and a glimmer that pigment alone can't produce. It shows most in her layered, atmospheric works, where the paint holds light in its depth. Her imagery mixes flowers, abstract colour fields and the light of the Irish coast in a vocabulary of signs and symbols that makes the work quickly recognisable.
