Creed Gallery in Ascot, Berkshire, offers original paintings and signed prints by Euan Roberts, the UK-based artist of Bajan and Scottish heritage known for a cast of animal characters, from yoga-practising bears to drunken crabs. Available works run from £500 to £3,000, including the original Easy and the signed print One For The Road. Our team can advise on edition, framing and provenance for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey and London.
About Euan Roberts: Animals Standing In for Us
Euan Roberts's work is about what it means to be human, but people never appear in it. Instead he paints a changing cast of yogic bears, drunken crabs, lonely chimps and crying sharks, distilling humour, hope, suffering, joy and longing. His familiar black bear taking up space in urban settings also refers, in his words, to the alienation that people of colour can feel in art-world spaces. He works mainly in painting, ceramics and drawing, and says his work is "all about instilling feelings of positivity in people".
Collaborations and Shows
In Mr Men's 50th anniversary year the brand invited him to combine his bear with Mr. Lazy, Mr. Greedy and Mr. Tickle, reportedly the first time the licence had been extended to a fine artist. The works were shown at Helm Gallery in Brighton and drew BBC and ITV coverage. He also created "Burny", a character for a London public health campaign about wood-burning and air pollution, and Enter Gallery has hosted two solo shows, in 2021 and 2023.
The Work: Bright, Simple and Deliberately Naive
His compositions are simple and brightly coloured, and knowingly naive. They celebrate the unspectacular and offer a kind of "art hug", a reminder to be grateful for the present moment.
