About Ian H Watkins: A Return to Painting

Ian H Watkins had planned to study at Cardiff College of Art before a music career intervened — he found global success as a member of the pop group Steps. Painting, he has said, "has always been my first love," and he now works from his native Wales, building a body of landscape painting inspired by its hills, lakes and mountains.

The Technique: Gold Leaf and the Land Itself

Watkins works in acrylic, pastel, charcoal and gold leaf, often incorporating sand or soil gathered from the locations he paints, working with instinctive speed to capture both the visual appearance of a landscape and its emotional resonance. His practice continues the Welsh landscape tradition established by painters like Kyffin Williams, reflecting hiraeth — the Welsh concept of yearning for place and time.

Why Collect Ian H Watkins

Watkins brings a genuinely personal relationship to his subject — Welsh landscape rendered with materials drawn from the land itself, and a documented public journey back to the art training he set aside for a music career. As with any artist, individual pieces vary in demand and value — our team is happy to talk you through the specifics of any work you're considering.
