Inam is a self-taught painter — or more precisely, a painter formed by three very different art schools in London, Istanbul, and Atlanta, Georgia, each contributing something specific to his technical and creative development — whose atmospheric woodland oils have made him one of the most distinctive landscape painters working today. Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, he was given a solid artistic foundation by an influential early teacher before travelling widely to absorb as much of the world's artistic traditions as he could. He has been based in the United States since establishing his professional practice in 2001.
His subjects are specific and atmospheric: forests shrouded in mist, silver birches glowing in moonlight, the particular quality of woodland light at its most mysterious and most beautiful. He works in oil, building surfaces of considerable depth and luminosity through sustained layering — each layer altering the colour and texture of those beneath it, the final surface holding a depth of field that flat paint cannot achieve. The effect is genuinely mesmerising: paintings that draw the viewer in and reward the sustained attention that the best landscape work always invites.
His Enchanted Woodland series is his most sustained and celebrated body of work — each iteration developing the visual proposition of the one before, the accumulated understanding visible in the confidence and resolution of the later works. His Cerulean Dreams, Echoes of Gold, Sunrise Sailing, and Into the Forest works demonstrate the range of his practice beyond the woodland: the coastal, the atmospheric, the luminous.
His work hangs in private collections worldwide — mansions, boardrooms, and yachts across multiple continents. He has exhibited from Karachi to Las Vegas. "When an artist's inner feelings are outwardly expressed, true art is born," he has said. "A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art."
