About Larissa Eremeeva: Painting Memory and Silence

Eremeeva was born in the then Soviet Union, studied art in Belgium and has lived and worked in the Netherlands, the United States and Italy. She began as a figurative painter of human behaviour, then moved to abstraction after returning to Europe, drawing on transience, memory, silence and what she calls the "poetry of just being". She names the poetry of Fernando Pessoa and Boris Pasternak as influences. Her studio is in what was the grand drawing room of a palazzo in Abruzzo. Her work has been exhibited in Rome, Pescara, Santander and Middelbeers, sold to collectors in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, and featured by the Jealous Curator.

The Work: Layers of Oil, Sand and Charcoal

Her paintings are built up in multiple layers of oil, augmented with sand, charcoal and graphite, each layer partly covering and partly revealing what came before. The result is abstract, but she intends it to evoke objects, feelings and memories that belong as much to the viewer as to her. The paintings are large, made to occupy a room rather than simply hang in one.
