About Mr. Brainwash: The Artist from Exit Through the Gift Shop
Thierry Guetta, the artist known as Mr. Brainwash, was born in France in 1966 and lives in Los Angeles. He began by filming street artists and, as told in Banksy's 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, was encouraged to make art himself and became Mr. Brainwash. The film was nominated for an Academy Award, and viewers still debate how much of it is staged. His first solo show, Life Is Beautiful, opened in June 2008 in a former TV studio in Hollywood and drew long queues of visitors. Madonna commissioned him to design the cover of her 2009 album Celebration, and in 2010 his painting Charlie Chaplin Pink sold at Phillips in New York for $122,500, almost double the upper end of its estimate.
The Work: Pop Art Icons, Screenprint, Stencil and Collage
Mr. Brainwash works in layers of screenprint, stencil, spray paint and collage, in the Pop Art tradition of Warhol and Lichtenstein. His subjects are cultural icons, from Charlie Chaplin and Einstein to Mickey Mouse, alongside upbeat slogans such as Life Is Beautiful, Hope is Beautiful and Peace is Beautiful. His unique originals are heavily worked mixed media, while his editions are screenprints, some hand-finished and signed, which is why Mr Brainwash art is instantly recognisable and sits at several price points.
Mr Brainwash Art for Sale: Originals, Silkscreens and Sculptures Explained
The format shapes both the price and the rarity. A unique original is a single work that is never repeated; With All My Love and Works Well Together are both £17,950, and a $1 Note original is £895. A limited-edition silkscreen is printed in a fixed edition, so more than one collector owns the image. A hand-finished edition adds individual touches by the artist to each piece. Mr. Brainwash is also known for sculpture, including basketball pieces such as MBW Collage and All You Need Is He[Art], both £995, and a Spray Can at £850.
Mr Brainwash Prints: Signed Silkscreens and Limited Editions
For collectors searching for Mr Brainwash prints, the signed silkscreen editions are the most direct way to own a piece. Hope is Beautiful and Peace is Beautiful are £2,750 each. Forever Mickey, Forever Minnie and Forever Starts Here are £1,950 each, with Dreams Come True at £2,450. Love Reigns, a Pop Art portrait of the young Princess Elizabeth marking the centenary of her birth, is £3,500, as is BasquiART. Larger editions include Fueled By Starry Nights, Beach Bug and Come Together at £4,500 and Dotted Bloom at £4,750, while Mom Can Do It (£1,295) and the Royal Albert Hall edition for the Teenage Cancer Trust 25th anniversary (£995) are accessible entry points.
