Paul Normansell is a British artist whose dot portrait technique places him in a category entirely his own — a practitioner whose meticulous, painstaking process and immediately distinctive visual results have earned him global recognition in the fashion, music, and fine art worlds simultaneously.
His method is specific, laborious, and physically demanding. Each portrait is built from thousands of individually painted dots of high gloss enamel on sheet aluminium — each dot different in size, shape, and colour, each applied freehand with a fine brush, no shortcuts, no mechanical assistance. The aluminium surface gives the finished work a flawless reflective quality, as if the image had been printed in a glossy magazine rather than painted by hand. The physics of the process requires him to work horizontally — the paint, applied to a vertical surface, would sag and run before drying — a constraint he has accommodated through improvised solutions ranging from a plank supported on two chairs to a suspended hammock, none of them entirely satisfactory, all of them contributing to the weekly back specialist appointments that are an occupational consequence of his chosen technique.
The results justify the process. His portraits of Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn have been acclaimed across the fashion industry. In 2008 Brandon Flowers of The Killers personally approached him to create the cover artwork for their third album Day & Age — subsequently certified multi-platinum and named Best Album Cover of the Year by Rolling Stone Magazine. He has exhibited in Japan, the United States, and Australia, with sell-out shows and sustained critical attention across multiple markets.
