Paul Oz is a British artist from Coventry whose explosive, physically committed portraiture has made him the pre-eminent painter of motorsport in his generation — and one of the most technically distinctive figurative artists currently working in the UK. His practice began after a career in marketing, a transition that gave him both the commercial intelligence to build a significant collector following and the freedom to develop a visual language entirely on his own terms.

His technique is specific and immediately recognisable: thick layers of oil and acrylic applied with the same urgency and physical commitment that his subjects bring to their disciplines. The paint is not laid flat but built — impasto passages of considerable tactile presence, surfaces that catch light and cast shadow, the physical reality of the paint carrying the energy of the subject in the same way that a racing car's bodywork carries the energy of its passage through air.
