Richard "Seen" Mirando was born in the Bronx in 1961 and began painting New York's subway cars at the age of eleven, a teenage apprenticeship in a movement that was, at the time, neither documented nor collected — simply a generation of writers competing, street by street and line by line, to develop the boldest and most legible style on a moving train. Mirando went on to lead the United Artists crew, responsible for some of the most recognisable whole-car pieces of the 1970s and 80s, and is now widely referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti, his work having featured in the landmark documentary Style Wars and the foundational photographic record Subway Art.
Seen's lettering style — bold, rounded, instantly legible even at speed — became one of graffiti's most widely copied templates, carried from the 2, 5, and 6 lines into galleries on both sides of the Atlantic as the movement's pioneers began exhibiting as fine artists in their own right. Mirando has described his own contribution in exactly those terms: a base print for other writers to build on. That lineage runs through everything he has made since, the tag itself treated not as a signature but as the entire subject of the work.
Unlike artists who move between editions and unique work, Seen's output held by Creed Gallery is exclusively original: each canvas is a single, unrepeatable spray-paint gesture rather than part of a numbered print run, the letterform built up directly on the canvas in the same physical act that once had to be completed on a moving subway car under cover of darkness. That immediacy — speed, risk, and a single irreversible pass of the can — is part of what is being collected, not just the image it leaves behind.
