About Seen: A Subway Graffiti Pioneer
Richard "Seen" Mirando was born in the Bronx in 1961 and painted his first train in 1973, aged 11. His crew, United Artists (UA), including Duster, Sin and his brother Mad, became known for whole-car, top-to-bottom pieces, especially on the 2, 5 and 6 lines. He featured in the documentary Style Wars and in the book Subway Art (1984), which took New York subway graffiti round the world. In the early 1980s he moved to canvas, and in 1981 his work was in P.S.1's New York/New Wave exhibition alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His lettering, he says, became "a base print for other artists to build on".
The Tag Paintings
Each of our Tag paintings takes Seen's own name and explodes it in spray paint until the letters dissolve into sweeping motion. The large Seen Tag (Bubble Gum Pink) is 104 × 49.5 cm (149.5 × 55 cm framed), and the smaller works in blue and pink show different letterforms and palettes. The tag is not a signature here but the whole subject of the work, built up in one direct, irreversible pass of the can, much as it was in the train yards where he began.
