About Barry Hilton: Painter of Northern Skies and Landscapes
Barry Hilton (born 1941) is one of the UK's most enduringly successful artists, with a following around the world. His celebrated landscapes express emotion and atmosphere through bold blocks of colour, and his greatest sources of inspiration are the moorland, rivers and harbours around his home in the north of England. In the 1970s he moved from the North West to Cornwall to work among popular artists of the day, where he learned lessons about light and dramatic skies that remain central to his work. Later in life he earned a first-class honours degree in ceramics, and in his late seventies took courses in printmaking.
The Technique: Smooth Skies and Heavy Impasto
Hilton is known for the contrast between his smooth, finely painted skies and the heavy impasto, or thick paint, of the highly coloured land beneath them. That contrast between light and dark, calm and storm, is central to every piece he paints. His moody skies and atmospheric shading make Barry Hilton landscapes instantly recognisable, while his harbour scenes tend to be more muted.
Barry Hilton Limited Edition Prints
Prints are the most accessible way to own Barry Hilton art. Sweeping Skies is a limited edition print released in 2021 to mark the artist's 80th birthday, and shows the broad, luminous skies of the northern landscape at their most dramatic; it measures 90 × 67 cm. Poppy Fields is a limited edition print in a square 70 × 70 cm format, bringing his finely painted skies and richly textured land to a field of summer poppies.
Barry Hilton Art for Sale: Landscapes for Every Room
The warm colour, strong horizon lines and dramatic skies in Barry Hilton landscapes suit living rooms, hallways and dining rooms, and the square Poppy Fields format works particularly well above a sideboard or fireplace.
