About Christian Hook: From Illustration to Portraiture
Christian Hook was born in Gibraltar in 1971 and studied illustration at Middlesex University. He worked as an illustrator and lectured at the Royal College of Art before taking up painting full-time. In 2014 he won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year with portraits including Amir Khan and Sir Ian McKellen, and the prize was a commission to paint Alan Cumming for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. That portrait was later chosen by John Leighton, the director of the National Galleries of Scotland, as one of the collection's 100 masterpieces. His sitters have included Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Sir Richard Branson, the Duchess of York and Dame Judi Dench. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar in 2017.
Science, Speed and Horses
His Sky Arts documentary Painting the Invisible, inspired by the physicist Carlo Rovelli, saw him work with a team of Nobel Prize-winning scientists. He has also painted racehorses, including a live portrait of the Godolphin horses at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. His equestrian editions, such as Two Blues and an Orange, take the horse into abstraction, using colour to suggest mood, atmosphere and light rather than description.
