Harland Miller was born in Yorkshire in 1964 and graduated from Chelsea School of Art with an MA in 1988. In 2000 he published a novel, Slow Down Arthur, Stick to Thirty, and a novella, At First I Was Afraid, I Was Petrified. He is best known for large paintings and prints that take the layout, typography and orange banding of a vintage Penguin paperback and give it an invented title. The phrases are joke, slogan and social observation in one, and the paint is deliberately loose against the rigid design. He is represented by White Cube.
Hate's Outta Date
The phrase appears across his work, including a rhino he painted for London's Tusk Rhino Trail, and in 2022 White Cube published it as two screenprint editions, in blue and yellow. Ours is a screenprint on paper, 100 × 70 cm, from an edition of 125, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
Prints and Paintings
Miller's paintings and his editions are very different things. His record auction prices are for unique paintings: Murder – We've All Done It sold for £325,000 at Christie's London in October 2021, and Too Cool To Die for £277,200 at Sotheby's London in March 2022. Christie's also sold Miller paintings from George Michael's collection in 2019. An edition of 125 sits at a different level, and we're happy to explain how.
