About L. S. Lowry
Laurence Stephen Lowry R.A. was born in Stretford, Lancashire, on 1st November 1887 and died on 23rd February 1976. He spent most of his life in Pendlebury, near Salford, and worked as a rent collector for the Pall Mall Property Company, painting in his spare time. He is best known for scenes of mills, terraced streets and crowds of small, stylised "matchstick" figures in the industrial north of England, painted with a limited palette of five colours. His first solo exhibition was at the Lefevre Gallery, London, in 1939, and he was elected a Royal Academician in 1962. Tate holds 23 of his works, and The Lowry in Salford Quays holds a major collection of his work.
