About Slawn: From Lagos Skate Culture to the BRITs
Slawn was born in Lagos in 2000. In his late teens he worked at Wafflesncream, Nigeria's first skate shop, where he and friends Leo and Onyedi formed Motherlan, an apparel and skate crew that caught the eye of Virgil Abloh. He moved to London in 2018 and studied graphic design at Middlesex University. When the 2020 lockdown began he started painting, handing works out at parties and building an audience online. His debut exhibition followed at Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in 2021. His work draws on cartoon motifs, spray paint and psychedelic forms, and on his Yoruba heritage and questions of identity and politics.
Milestones: Sotheby's, the BRITs and the FA Cup
In 2022 he organised a charity auction at Sotheby's with Skepta, which included Skepta's first painting. In 2023 he became the youngest person to design the Britannia statuette for the BRIT Awards. In 2024 the Football Association commissioned him to design a one-off special trophy for the Emirates FA Cup final, made with the silversmiths Thomas Lyte.
The Editions and Originals
The Worldwide series is a set of city prints in bold yellows, reds and blues, with editions for Lagos, Accra, Los Angeles and Seoul. His solo cartoon works include Strongman (Popeye) and Felix. The Slawn x Opake series pairs him with London artist Opake (Ed Worley) in reworkings of well-known cartoon and comic characters. On the originals side, his hand-painted boxing gloves, framed as box sculptures at 44 × 46 cm, turn a confrontational object into a canvas.
