Simon Kenny (b. 1976, Dublin) is a multi-award winning Irish artist whose vibrant, expressive paintings have earned him a significant international collector base — described by critics as a "radical Turner," his practice engages with light, atmosphere, and colour as primary subjects rather than means of depicting something else, the painterly tradition of J.M.W. Turner taken into fully abstract territory with a directness and formal confidence that is entirely his own.
His style is lyrical abstraction — a term that captures the dual nature of his practice: the musical quality of colour relationships built through intuition and feeling, combined with the painterly freedom of abstraction that refuses the constraints of literal description. No work is site-specific, yet each carries the quality of a specific atmosphere, a particular quality of light, a mood that connects with the viewer's own experience and memory. "My aim is for the viewer to connect personally with each composition," he has said — to be reminded of a place they once knew, or visited by an unexpected moment of emotion.
His technique combines brush and palette knife work, subtle under-painting, and graduating alterations in colour — a process that is as physically committed as it is emotionally intelligent. "My personality is a big part of what I paint," he has said. "I do become incredibly emotionally connected to my work, almost treating it as though it's a living thing. My mood plays a part in the colours I choose, or the way I use my brushes and knives, and it can certainly affect the direction of the work; that's what makes it so special to me."
He has exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery and in prestigious exhibitions across the UK, Europe, and the United States, where his corporate and private collector base is substantial.
