About Sir Michael Craig-Martin

Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941, grew up and studied in the United States (Fordham and Yale) and moved to Britain in 1966. His conceptual work An Oak Tree (1973), a glass of water declared to be an oak tree, is among the best known in British art. He taught at Goldsmiths, University of London from 1974 to 1988 and again from 1994 to 2000, and is widely credited with fostering the Young British Artists, including Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas and Gary Hume. He was appointed CBE in 2001, elected a Royal Academician in 2006 and knighted in 2016, and the Royal Academy staged a career-spanning exhibition in 2024.

The Work: Everyday Objects in Flat Colour

Since the late 1970s he has drawn everyday objects, such as lightbulbs, trainers, umbrellas and books, in flat, saturated colour outlined in black, with no shadow or context. Each object floats alone and carries equal weight, and he applies the same graphic language to painting, wall drawings and prints.

Deconstructing Seurat (Blue)

In 2004 he took Georges Seurat's pointillist compositions and translated them into his own language: the shimmer of Seurat's divided colour becomes flat, bold colour fields separated by clean lines, with Seurat's composition kept intact. The series was issued in pairs in several colourways. Our pair shows an industrial landscape and a bathers scene, in blue, purple, pink and green.
