About Steve Tandy: Wildlife in Mid-Century Pop Culture

Steve Tandy is a British artist whose wildlife paintings place penguins, pandas and polar bears in the settings of mid-century popular culture. His scenes borrow from the world of Marlon Brando, James Dean, Jimi Hendrix, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe, with an animal in the place of the person. The animals take on human personalities, and the joke only works because the painting is done with real conviction.

The Technique: Realism, Surrealism and Pop Art

Tandy describes his work as realism and surrealism with pop art influences. His animals appear in movie scenes, beside motorcycles and vintage cars, and inside references to well-known paintings of the 1950s and 1960s. It is not caricature. The human is replaced by the animal so completely that the picture looks absurd and entirely right at the same time.

Beneath the Wit: Environmental Awareness

There is a serious thread under the humour. Many of his paintings carry subtle references to deforestation, climate change and the changing habitats of the animals he paints. The playfulness gets you in, and the message stays with you.

Steve Tandy at Creed Gallery

His Paddington Bear series brings the same warmth and humour to one of Britain's best-loved characters, and Follow Your Dreams is the work most people ask us about. Stay Wild, a limited edition of 195 measuring 26 × 26 inches, shows a leopard stretched across an emerald-green sofa in a glamorous cocktail bar. Tandy has exhibited at the Windsor Contemporary Art Show, where the Mayor of Windsor bought one of his paintings, and his work is shown in galleries in the UK and Australia. We expect further releases, so get in touch to be notified. You are also welcome to visit the gallery at 4 Hermitage Parade, Ascot, SL5 7HE.
