Andy Warhol (1928–1987) — Sunday B. Morning Flowers

Andy Warhol remains the most recognisable figure to emerge from American Pop Art, translating the surfaces of consumer culture and celebrity into a visual language built on repetition, colour, and mechanical reproduction. Working from his New York studio, The Factory, Warhol treated the silkscreen not merely as a printmaking technique but as a statement on originality itself, a position that found its clearest expression in the Flowers series he began in 1964, developed from a photograph of hibiscus blossoms he encountered in a photography magazine and reworked into one of the most widely circulated images of his career.

This print belongs to the Sunday B. Morning editions, produced under a licence granted by Warhol in the 1970s to two Belgian associates, who used the artist's own photo-negative stencils to continue printing the Flowers, Marilyn, and Soup Cans imagery independently of the Factory's original runs. Warhol himself blurred the line between original and reproduction by signing some of these prints "This is not by me, Andy Warhol," and the company has continued to publish from the same stencils in the decades since, with each sheet stamped in blue ink on the reverse, "Published by Sunday B. Morning," and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
