Hayley Goodhead — Check You Out

Hayley Goodhead, born and raised in rural Staffordshire, graduated with a first-class BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Gloucestershire in 2010, having found her subject almost by accident when a commission to paint a black Labrador in her second year set her on a path toward wildlife portraiture. Her signature style since has paired photorealistic animal painting with the imagery of fashion and consumer culture, reworking zebras, leopards and other creatures as sly commentary on branding and status, a body of work she began publishing as limited editions from 2013 onward.

Check You Out is a characteristic example: a zebra's head and mane emerge from a printed barcode, its natural stripes bleeding almost seamlessly into the barcode's black lines before resolving into a string of digits beneath. The visual pun sits at the centre of Goodhead's practice, collapsing the line between the animal's own markings and the retail code that reduces any product, however singular, to a scannable number.
