Lincoln Townley — Bacon’s Colony Room

Lincoln Townley is a self-taught British painter whose expressive, heavily worked portraits have drawn comparisons to Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach, built up through aggressive layers of oil applied with palette knife and brush in equal measure. Townley’s subjects range from boxers and gangland figures to self-portraits, each rendered with a distorted, almost violent intensity that prioritises psychological presence over likeness.

Bacon’s Colony Room takes its title from the legendary Soho drinking club where Francis Bacon held court for decades, a space as bound up with his myth as his studio. Townley’s painting channels that same raw, unguarded register: a half-obscured face dissolving into smears of green, white and crimson against a burning orange ground, the sitter rendered less as a likeness than as a presence caught mid-collapse. The work has recently been shown at the Venice Biennale.

Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
