Waterlilies III is the third work in Magdalena Morey's most sustained and ambitious series — a body of work that enters into direct dialogue with one of the most studied subjects in the history of Western painting. Monet's water lily series at Giverny, which he painted obsessively in the last decades of his life, produced some of the most celebrated paintings in the history of Impressionism; Morey's Waterlilies series asks what it means to return to that subject with contemporary eyes and a contemporary formal vocabulary.
