Mary-Jane Alexander — Sunflowers and Lemons

Mary-Jane Alexander is a painter born in Zimbabwe who has lived and worked in the UK since 1977, now based in Surrey. Classically trained in anatomy, life drawing and sculpture, she is known for her rich, confident impasto brushwork and vivid, dramatic use of colour, dividing her time between Surrey and a studio in Campania, in the south of Italy.

Sunflowers and Lemons is a warm, sunlit still life built almost entirely from golds, ochres and warm greens: a cluster of sunflowers set in a rustic ceramic pot, surrounded by a scatter of lemons. The loose, confident brushwork reflects Alexander's years of painting en plein air, bringing the same immediacy to this interior composition.
