BasquiART is Mr. Brainwash's direct homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat — one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, whose Neo-Expressionist practice in 1980s New York transformed the relationship between street art and the fine art establishment. The title fuses Basquiat's name with the word "art" in the manner of Basquiat's own practice of embedding text within image — a structural tribute as much as a visual one.

Mr. Brainwash and Basquiat occupy adjacent territories in the story of art's relationship with popular culture — both drawing on street origins, both engaging with the visual language of urban life, both building practices that refuse to stay within the boundaries that art institutions prefer. This work makes that connection explicit, placing Mr. Brainwash in direct dialogue with one of his most significant predecessors.
