Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) — Joueur de Flute et Chevre III
Pablo Picasso remains the most influential artist of the twentieth century, the co-founder of Cubism whose six-decade career reshaped modern art across painting, sculpture, ceramics and print. In the years after the Second World War, working first in Antibes and then Vallauris on the French Riviera, Picasso turned to a distinctly Mediterranean cast of subjects — fauns, centaurs, goats, fish and pastoral scenes drawn from classical mythology — rendered with the loose, joyful line of his later style.
Joueur de Flute et Chevre III sets a pair of fauns within an open Mediterranean landscape, the kind of pastoral scene-setting Picasso used to place his mythological figures somewhere between classical antiquity and the Riviera coastline in front of him. This is an unsigned reproduction print after Picasso's original design, not a hand-pulled or artist-signed edition.
This work is an original 1948 heliogravure reproduction published by Draeger Frères, Paris, reproducing a painting created by Picasso in 1946. It forms part of the history of Picasso’s work being disseminated through the high-quality art publications of the period.
About the Heliogravure Process
Heliogravure, also known as photogravure, is a sophisticated intaglio printing technique developed to reproduce artwork and photographic imagery with exceptional tonal depth and detail.
The process uses a photographic image to create a finely etched copper printing plate. Variations in the depth of the etched plate allow different amounts of ink to be retained, producing subtle gradations of tone and a rich, almost photographic quality.
Heliogravure was particularly valued for the reproduction of fine art because of its ability to preserve delicate tonal variations, texture and detail. The resulting prints have a distinctive depth and softness that distinguish them from more conventional photographic reproductions.
