Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is the defining artist of the modern era — co-founder of Cubism with Georges Braque, and among the most prolific and continuously inventive figures in Western art history, working across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking for seven decades. "Joueur de Flûte Chèvre I" sketches out Picasso's recurring Mediterranean cast of horned pipers and goats in a few searching lines washed with loose colour — a first, pared-back take on a pastoral, myth-inflected motif he returned to across drawings, ceramics and prints during his years at Vallauris and Mougins.
