RETNA | Untitled Watercolour
RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979) is recognised for his distinctive visual language, combining influences from calligraphy, typography and historic writing systems to create a highly recognisable contemporary style.
Rather than functioning as conventional text, RETNA’s constructed script becomes an expressive visual form. Repeated characters, dense linework and carefully structured compositions create a strong sense of rhythm and movement across the surface.
In this original watercolour, RETNA adopts a more fluid and intimate approach to his visual language. Interlocking forms and structured passages move across the paper in blue, plum and burnt terracotta, creating a composition that balances geometric structure with the movement of hand-drawn marks.
The work is executed in watercolour on Arches Aquarelle paper, with the deckled edge visible within the frame. As an original, unique work rather than a printed edition, it offers a direct example of RETNA’s practice on paper.
An original RETNA work, available through Creed Gallery, Ascot.
