Thirsty Bstrd — Ascot Girl

Thirsty Bstrd, the Paris-based street and pop artist working under the name Julien Surdeau, builds his practice on satire: spray paint, stencils and stickers turned toward the symbols of consumer culture, celebrity, and status, reworked until they look funny or strange enough to provoke a second look. Self-taught and formerly the creative director of his own Paris agency, he has spent the years since curating and exhibiting urban art across Paris, London, New York and Singapore, building a body of work that reads as pop art's wit filtered through a street artist's tools.

The companion piece to Ascot Boy, Ascot Girl places a young girl in an oversized wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, pearls and heels, a designer handbag in hand and an "Ascot Royal Invitation" in the other, against a spray of purple stars, a crown, and a bold VIP stencil. As with its counterpart, the joke depends on scale: adult luxury and social aspiration transposed onto a child, rendered in the same black-and-white silhouette technique that runs through Thirsty Bstrd's satirical take on status and consumer culture.
