Ai Weiwei is among the most significant artists and activists of the twenty-first century — a Chinese artist whose work has engaged directly with political oppression, human rights abuses, and the experience of displacement with a moral courage and artistic intelligence that has made him one of the most discussed cultural figures in the world. Detained by the Chinese government for 81 days in 2011, he has since used his international platform and his art to advocate for refugees, political prisoners, and the victims of institutional violence.

Odyssey takes its title from Homer's great poem of wandering and return — one of the foundational texts of Western literature, now also the word used to describe the journeys of refugees crossing the Mediterranean. Ai Weiwei's engagement with the refugee crisis has been one of the most sustained and morally serious artistic responses to the humanitarian emergency of our time.
