Richie Magritte is one of Alec Monopoly's most conceptually sophisticated works — a collision between his Richie Rich protagonist and the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte, whose bowler-hatted bourgeois figures are among the most recognisable images in twentieth-century art. The meeting is not accidental: both Magritte's anonymous businessman and Monopoly's Richie Rich are figures of privilege, wealth, and the particular anonymity that comes with extreme affluence.
The pink hand-finished variant introduces colour decisions made by Monopoly himself after printing — each impression individually worked, making it part print, part painting, uniquely situated between the two categories. The pink palette softens the composition without diminishing its critical edge: if anything, the sweetness of the colour makes the comment about wealth and its representations more pointed.
Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
