Roger 2 continues Angel Ortiz's sustained engagement with a subject — the face, the identity, the recurring figure — that runs through his practice from his earliest collaborations with Keith Haring through his independent career. Ortiz — born in the Lower East Side in 1967, beginning his graffiti career at twelve, introduced to Haring in 1980 — brings to Roger 2 the dense, intricate pattern-filling and energetic mark-making that characterised the Haring collaborations while expressing a visual intelligence that is entirely his own.

The "2" designation marks this as the second version of a composition — the return to a subject with accumulated understanding, the painting that knows what the first one was trying to do and does it more fully.
