The story behind the artwork
Bapsybanoo was an Indian socialite and aristocrat born in Bombay in 1902. Bapsy travelled Europe extensively, meeting many leaders and monarchs along the way, which helped on her rise through high society. In 1952 Bapsy married Henry Paulet to become the marchioness of Winchester and the only Indian marchioness in history. The marriage only lasted weeks. Bapsy felt shunned by people in Winchester so she left to live in London. In her later years Bapsy set up an award at Columbia university for international peace and understanding and two fellowships at Oxford university. On her death in 1995 she donated £500,000 to Winchester council to set up a community centre in her name.
“Bapsy came to Winchester and felt rejected and is now only remembered through legacy’s she her self funded. I wanted to change that.” -Hendog
