This mesmerising artwork from British contemporary artist Michael Rumsby is taken from his ‘Shakkei’ collection. Shakkei is the ancient Chinese practice of ‘borrowing’ scenery to incorporate background landscapes into the composition of a garden design to enhance the overall aesthetic. In ‘Borrowed Sundays’ the beautiful interior, with its terracotta tiled floor, opulent hangings, elegant furnishings and yellow vase brimming with blue hydrangeas, is a room in Michael’s home in France; but the ‘borrowed’ view was painted in a studio on Spain’s Costa del Sol, which looks out over the Mediterranean.
