Bradley Theodore (b. 1968)
Skull — Black
Limited edition

Bradley Theodore was born in the Turks and Caicos Islands and trained at the Jamaica School of Art before moving to New York, where his work rapidly attracted serious attention for its combination of figurative expressionism, Afro-Caribbean cultural references, and a visual language that draws on both street art and the formal tradition of Western painting. He has been compared to Basquiat for the energy and cultural complexity of his work, and his practice has been supported by collectors including Pharrell Williams and L.A. Reid.

Skull — Black is among Theodore's most formally resolved works in the skull genre — a subject with a long history from Holbein to Hirst, which Theodore approaches with the expressive freedom of his expressionist background and the cultural weight of an artist who has thought seriously about what mortality means in different cultural contexts. The black palette gives the work a severity that the more colourful works in his skull series do not have — this is the skull as a formal object, stripped of decorative distraction.

Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
