Cleon Peterson — born in Seattle in 1973, based in Los Angeles, holder of an MFA from Cranbrook Academy — makes work that confronts the viewer with the darkest aspects of human social organisation: power, domination, violence, and the cycles of control and submission that shape political and social life. His visual language draws on Greek pottery, WWII propaganda, the graphic design tradition in which he trained (working for Shepard Fairey's Studio Number One before his solo career), and the specific visual vocabulary of street art.

It's Mine is among his most directly stated titles — the possessive claim that underlies so much human conflict, the assertion of ownership that justifies dominance. In Peterson's characteristic black, white, and gold palette, the declaration becomes something both universal and immediately contemporary. In 2016 he created the first mural ever painted at the base of the Eiffel Tower. His work fetches five-figure prices on the secondary market. Signed.
