Craig Alan makes images that only reveal themselves at distance. Each of his Populus works is constructed from hundreds of meticulously hand-painted miniature figures — tiny people who, viewed up close, are discrete individuals with distinct postures and gestures, but who, seen from across a room, resolve into a single coherent image. The technique demands extraordinary patience and a sustained awareness of two scales simultaneously: the figure and the whole, the individual and the crowd.

King For A Day applies this method to a subject of particular resonance: the fantasy of power, the momentary elevation of the individual above the collective. The work operates as both celebration and commentary — the figure at the centre of the crowd, momentarily sovereign, surrounded by the human mass that both creates and limits that sovereignty.

Alan's Populus series has attracted significant international collector attention. His work is technically unique — there is no other artist working at this level of figural density and compositional complexity — and the combination of visual spectacle and conceptual substance gives his canvases lasting power.
