Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965, studied at Goldsmiths College and won the Turner Prize in 1995. He is known for his spot, spin and butterfly works and his preserved animal sculptures, and Tate Modern staged a major survey of his career in 2012.

Hirst's spin paintings are made by placing a surface on a spinning machine and pouring paint onto it, so the colour is flung outward by centrifugal force into radial patterns. The amount of paint, the speed of the spin and the moment of application make each one unique. This original spin painting is a blue circle with bursts of green and red radiating outward, and it carries one of the long, flowing titles typical of the series.
