Damien Hirst (b. 1965) — Wu Zetian

Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965, studied at Goldsmiths College and won the Turner Prize in 1995. He is known for his spot, spin and butterfly works and his preserved animal sculptures, and Tate Modern staged a major survey of his career in 2012.

Wu Zetian is from Hirst's The Empresses series, which draws on powerful historical female figures and reinterprets traditional ornamental patterns through symmetry, colour and symbolism. The work is named after the only female emperor in Chinese history, and its richly detailed red surface and intricate patterning reference historical motifs while keeping a striking contemporary presence. It is ready to hang without a frame.
