Galaxy Dust takes the Cosmic Carpark series into the territory of particle and mass — the fine-grained substance of the universe, the dust from which galaxies form and to which they eventually return. Sheeran approaches this subject with a painter's instinct for texture and surface: the granular, scattered quality of the title finding its formal equivalent in a painted surface that carries its own material complexity.

The work sits within a tradition of abstract painting that has always been drawn to the cosmic — from Rothko's colour fields to the more recent generation of painters working with light and atmosphere — while remaining unmistakably personal in its execution. Galaxy Dust is the work of someone learning to paint seriously, in real time, and bringing to that process the same sustained commitment that has characterised everything else he has done at the highest level.
