Francis Bacon (1909–1992) — Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X
Francis Bacon (1909–1992) was a Dublin-born British painter whose raw, distorted figures made him one of the defining figurative artists of the twentieth century. His triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud sold for $142.4 million at Christie's New York in 2013.
Painted in 1953 and held by the Des Moines Art Center, the Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X reworks Velázquez's court portrait as a screaming figure seated behind curtain-like vertical lines. This limited edition, published by HENI in collaboration with the Estate of Francis Bacon, is a direct print on aluminium composite panel.
Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
