James McQueen
Anthology I | Unique
Unique large-scale original mixed media
The Anthology series represents James McQueen at his most personal. Inspired directly by his wife's pile of books beside the bed — different titles waiting to be read, half-read, or abandoned back on the pile — the series explores what an individual's reading choices reveal about them: their desires, their anxieties, their aspirations, the private world they inhabit through literature. "Reading material is subjective, much like art," McQueen has said, "and anyone can in theory get involved."
This unique large-scale original is the first in the Anthology series — the work that established the proposition that the subsequent editions developed and refined. As the primary unique version, it occupies a specific historical position within McQueen's catalogue: the original statement of an idea that proved significant enough to extend. The large format gives the typography the monumental presence it needs; the layered, sanded surface gives the work the physical weight of a book that has been read many times.
Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
