Black on Black is Kate Paul's most radical monochromatic proposition — a work in which the gestural calligraphic mark and the ground share not merely the same hue but the same colour, differentiated only by the texture and direction of the paint itself. Where White on White invites the viewer into a world of light, Black on Black asks them to look into depth: to find the mark in the darkness, to discover complexity in what appears at first to be uniformity.

The work connects to a tradition of monochromatic art that includes Ad Reinhardt's Black Paintings and Pierre Soulages' Outrenoir — painting that uses the apparent absence of colour to reveal what colour usually conceals.
