Original abstract

Blue on Blue II takes Kate Paul's most formally demanding palette — monochromatic, differentiated only by tone and texture — and develops it through the additional complexity of the II iteration. Working in the tradition of monochromatic painting that includes Yves Klein's International Klein Blue and Robert Ryman's white paintings, Paul investigates what happens when colour contrast is removed entirely and the viewer is asked to engage with surface, gesture, and material alone.

The result is a painting that rewards more sustained attention than almost anything else in her catalogue — a work that opens up slowly, that reveals its complexity gradually, that asks the viewer to look past the initial impression of sameness to the rich differentiation beneath.
