Sand on Beige is Kate Paul's most texturally evocative work — a large-scale calligraphic painting in which the palette itself carries the subject matter. Sand and beige: the colours of the earth, of stone, of the specific warmth of the Lower Silesian landscape that gives her practice its conceptual foundation. The calligraphic marks in this palette operate differently from those in her higher-contrast works — absorbed rather than announced, the marks requiring sustained attention to reveal themselves fully against the ground.
