Lincoln Townley (b. 1971)
Skull Banker | Dealer
Mixed media on canvas | Original
Lincoln Townley's Skull Banker series holds two worlds in tension: the language of finance — the banker, the dealer, the mechanisms of capital — and the skull, which in Western art from Holbein to Hirst has served as the most direct available statement about what finance ultimately cannot address. Townley is not making a simple anti-capitalist argument. He is exploring the psychology of people who exist within financial systems — the attraction and the cost, the energy and the consequence.
The Dealer variant focuses on a specific figure within that system: the intermediary, the broker, the person whose existence depends on transaction. Townley's mixed-media surface — built up in layers, dense with material incident — gives the work a physical weight that matches its psychological subject. This is painting as investigation, not illustration.
Collected by Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone, and Robbie Williams, and sold through Sotheby's and Christie's, Townley's market is established. Available exclusively through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
