The White Rose introduces into the Skull Banker series one of the most symbolically loaded of natural objects — the white rose carrying associations of innocence, purity, and the specifically English tradition of the Wars of the Roses in which the white rose of York stood against the red rose of Lancaster. In the context of the Skull Banker — whose suits and briefcases speak of the City of London, of financial power, of the specifically English tradition of the financial establishment — the white rose creates a tension that is both aesthetically and historically charged. The blue mount gives this version its specific visual character.
